What a week!  Seventh grade was testing on Tuesday and Wednesday and we had our second book survey quiz.  Remember the best score out of the two will be recorded in the gradebook.  How to read a map was the objective of the week.  We looked at a maps key, scale, and compass rose.  We learned about two different main types of maps:  General Purpose Maps and Special Purpose Maps.  From these two main types we created a graphic organizer which showed two different types of general purpose maps, political and physical, and a contour map, which is a type of physical map.   Finally, we looked at a population density map, a type of special purpose map.  All of this information that we have learned this past week we will be using in this weeks activity.  "Flight" will be the activity of the week where each of you will be put in teams of three.  There will be a pilot, a copilot, and a navigator.  All will have certain jobs they will perform everyday related to the activity.  Students will plan their strategies, figure out specific flight plans, react to the vagaries of fate, make new decisions, and record what happens to them as they experience the following:

• What map symbols mean
• What a distnace scale means
• The purpose of latitude and longitude
• Reading maps
• Figuring distance and direction
• Reading latitude and longitude
• Cooperating in order to make group decisions
• Writing diary entries
